Early on in the pandemic, the Windsor County RiseVT team based out of Mt Ascutney Hospital & Health Center could not physically interact with their communities, so they took their efforts to keep communities healthy online. RiseVT-Windsor County’s intern, Meckenzie Varieur led the creation of The At Home Olympics Contest. For one month starting at the end of April 2020, children and families completed weekly challenges that encouraged physical activity, collaboration, and creativity while maintaining physical distancing.
The challenges were posted on Facebook and ranged from ball games to DIY obstacle courses. Families shared their completion of a challenge via a photo/video submission. With each submission, they were entered into a weekly prize drawing and a grand prize. Families from the towns of Weathersfield, Cavendish, and Hartland participated and many of these families participated for the duration of the contest.
The contest was such a success that RiseVT-Windsor County is hoping to plan another virtual challenge later this summer so folks in the Hartland area should keep an eye on the Windsor County Facebook page for updates.
The Windsor County At Home Olympics most closely aligns with CDC Strategy number 14 to increase opportunities for extracurricular physical activity.
