Colchester, Vt. – OneCare Vermont has announced that Abe Berman has been selected as Chief Executive Officer of the organization after a national search. Berman has served as interim CEO since May 2023.

Berman has been involved in value-based care efforts for most of his career. Prior to his current role, he was instrumental in the early development and launch of OneCare and served as Director of ACO Finance for several years before moving on to progressive executive leadership roles in network management for a large commercial insurer. More recently he was a leader in revenue strategy for the University of Vermont Health Network where he focused on the successful transition toward value based and fixed revenue streams.

“The OneCare Board of Managers conducted a thorough national search and Abe was the clear choice to lead the organization as CEO,” said Anya Rader Wallack, board chair. “Abe has proven to be a thoughtful and innovative leader during his tenure as interim CEO. He understands how to partner with Vermont health care providers across the continuum of care to deliver high value, equitable care, and more equitable outcomes for the communities we serve. He is the right leader as we evolve the organization and continue to build on the momentum and progress made over the last decade.”

OneCare is an accountable care organization that partners with local health care providers to transform Vermont’s health care system to one that focuses on health goals, by providing actionable data and innovative payments that foster better health outcomes for all. OneCare establishes value-based care contracts with insurance payers (Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial insurers) on behalf of over 5,000 participating providers from the full continuum of care, including primary care, specialists, hospitals, designated agencies, home health, and long-term care providers. By supporting providers, increasing access to preventative care, and paying for value and health outcomes rather than various services, such as tests and operations, this value-based system will keep Vermonters healthier and help control health care spending growth.

“Abe has been a leader in value-based care for over a decade and I have seen first-hand his commitment to the success of health care reform,” said Tom Huebner, board vice chair. “He will continue to examine how we can work with the state and federal governments to provide the greatest value to our participating providers and, through them, all Vermonters, for decades to come.”

“My goal is to be kind, restless and relentless in the pursuit of a high performing and sustainable health care system that delivers better outcomes for our community. OneCare is an essential organizing force and support structure that enables providers to work together to ensure that all Vermonters get the right care in the right place at the right time,” said Abe Berman, OneCare CEO. “Our health care system is at a critical inflection point as we approach the end of the Vermont All-Payer Model extension and I’m excited to explore how best to support Vermont’s providers in the next evolution of system transformation.”
